Self Care Tip #1: Start Off With a Bubble Bath
Baths are the first part of my zero waste self care routine because they help me to relax. When you take a warm bath your skin releases endorphins in response similar to when our skin feels the warmth of the sun. Warm baths also increase our blood flow to the skin becoming therapeutic and reinvigorating. Hot baths are also anti-inflammatory and can help you burn calories!
For me, warm/hot baths calm me down and help me relax-so much so that I am often sleepy after a long hot bath! This is my #1 go to when I am feeling stressed or anxious about something that I have no control over. I usually feel so much better after a hot bath that I even have forgotten why I was stressed, and I can continue relaxing through the next steps of self care! Here are some tips to make your bath even better…
There are many therapeutic benefits to using essential oils. Some oils are anti-inflammatory, some are even relaxing! You can try out a few and determine which scent you prefer or even look up which benefits you want to add to your bath. Simply add a few drops into the running water of your bath to let in mix in fully! Lavender is a great option as it is calming and relaxing.
Magnesium deficiency can induce stress and anxiety! One way to help balance out your magnesium levels is to take an epsom salt bath. Epsom salts are made of magnesium and sulfate so soaking in an hot epsom salt bath can possible help your skin absorb this magnesium. There are even reports of epsom salts relaxing your muscles! Unfortunately there is a lack of scientific evidence on the benefits of epsom salt baths. Yet, this does not mean that they do not work, many people do swear by their effects! This simply means that there is not enough evidence to prove there are actual benefits to a epsom salt bath, there are still proven benefits to taking hot baths though! So wether or not you choose to add epsom salts to your hot bath or not, your hot bath alone will definitely calm you down.
If you want to try out epsom salts to see for yourself you can get some here.
Bath bombs can help you have an even more calming bath for several reasons. Obviously the fun colors from bath bombs can encourage you to take a bath! It sure tricks me. Many bath bombs also contain ingredients that are good for your skin such as shea butter, coconut oil, and more! These ingredients are so good for your skin and are very moisturizing. Bath bombs also often contain essential oils and epsom salts with them so that you can have it all in one!
I love bath bombs because they are both fun and I always notice that my skin is so smooth and soft afterwards! I recommend these bath bombs from Amazon because they are a great price, are made with natural and organic ingredients, are cruelty free, handmade, and use only organic and sustainable palm oil! Their packaging also looks like it is just paper which means it is recyclable!
You can also always go to your local Lush store to buy package free bath bombs but they choose to have sulphates and other potentially harsh ingredients that these handmade bath bombs don’t have.
Self Care Tip #2: Light Up Those Soy Candles!
Soy candles are so much better for the environment than paraffin candles. In fact, I have a whole blog post on the benefits of soy candles! You can check that out here.
I enjoy my baths much more when I turn off all the strong lighting in my bathroom and enjoy the simple low light of candles. This helps me to relax so much more! I recommend you light some soy candles with your bath to truly relax and unwind. One of my favorite soy candles is this one! Or you can try finding some made locally! Try etsy.com or your local farmers market to get one local to you.
Self Care Tip #3: Replenish Skin With a Face Mask
I love me a good face mask! Different ingredients provide different benefits for your skin when it comes to face masks. I recommend you find one that comes in a glass jar that can be repurposed or recycled instead of a plastic one! You should also look for a mask that only has organic ingredients and contains no sulphates, parabens, and the like. I found this mask on Amazon that has great reviews, is in a glass jar, and contains only natural ingredients! This is the next mask I will be buying! Or you can even look up DIY recipes and create your own face mask!
Self Care Tip #4: Cuddle Up in Organic Sheets
The next time you need a new set of sheets I highly recommend you choose organic ones! There are so many benefits to choosing organic sheets over conventional sheets! Let’s look into three main reasons.
3 Reasons to Love Organic Sheets!
- -Regular cotton sheets are made from cotton grown with lots of harmful pesticides. These pesticides can still linger in the sheets and can cause respiratory and skin reactions in sensitive individuals. Sheets that are “wrinkle free” contain formaldehyde which is a harmful chemical that is a known carcinogen. Although there is currently not much scientific evidence proving that these kinds of sheets can actually harm you, there is evidence that this can cause contact dermatitis in sensitive individuals and is still very harmful for the workers in the factories making these sheets. Regardless if these sheets are truly harmful for us or not, choosing organic sheets are still clearly better for us as they contain no harmful pesticides. If you don’t have organic cotton sheets, try washing your sheets in hot water to reduce the amount of these harmful chemicals
- -Organic cotton is better for the environment. There are a lot of harmful pesticides used in growing non organic cotton. These pesticides have harmful effects on the workers and farmers, as well as the environment. These pesticides can leach into the ground or into water systems. Organic cotton on the other hand is grown without any harmful pesticides which reduces all of these risks for both farmers and the environment making the whole process much safer. Cotton grown organically also uses significantly less water than non organic cotton saving water supply as well. This applies to organic bamboo sheets as well!
- -Organic cotton is also compostable at the end of it’s life! Any type of sheet that is made from polyester or any other man made product cannot be composted. Yet, once you are all done using your organic cotton bedding you can simply return it to the earth by composting it!
Organic cotton sheets are a great way to incorporate self care into your life because not only will your self care naps be comfy but they will also be sustainable! Since purchasing organic sheets I simply can’t wait to curl up in bed! They are so soft and comfy. Experience this for yourself! These Organic Cotton Sateen Sheets are the sheets I am currently using (pictured above) and I’m not going back!
Self Care Tip #5: Unwind With a Sustainable Book
The last step in our zero waste self care routine is to unwind from the day by reading a great book. I recommend you use this time to take a break from electronics to truly relax. Taking a screen time break for a few hours will definitely help you to reconnect. You can even do this while relaxing in your organic sheets! Choose a book that will inspire you to keep living sustainably too. I highly recommend this great read from Katherine Kellogg entitled 101 Ways to Go Zero Waste. This book has so many great ideas! If you don’t already have it, you can buy it here!
Well hopefully after reading this list you were inspired to incorporate some of these sustainable and zero waste self care ideas into your life! It is good to take some time every week to set aside just for some self care. You can even incorporate some of these ideas every day! Keep sustaining yourself so that you can keep sustaining our planet.
