Why You Need to Start Using a Shampoo Bar
Picture this: you take your shower, you wash your hair and you leave your shower with healthier, cleaner hair and there is no plastic shampoo bottle to throw away. Beautiful idea isn’t it? What if I told you that it could be a reality and is the reality for many people today? Crazy right?! Wrong. It’s called a shampoo bar.

What is a Shampoo Bar?
Before I tell you why you need to start using a shampoo bar you need to know what it is. A shampoo bar is basically a form of solid shampoo.
The difference between liquid shampoo and a shampoo bar is the same difference between liquid soap and a soap bar. Liquid shampoos have to come packaged in bottles (often plastic ones), but solid shampoos can come packaged in paper, boxes, or even completely package free! Another difference is that the shampoo bar is much more concentrated than the liquid one, so it should last longer! Liquid shampoos are made with lots of water to keep them liquid, but solid shampoos don’t need that extra water.
Perhaps you’ve heard of these lovely little bars or maybe this is a new concept for you, but regardless, I’m going to tell you four main reasons why I use shampoo bars and how you can too (don’t worry this is really easy!).
Why You Need to Use a Shampoo Bar
Check out these four reasons why you should make the switch from solid shampoo to a bar!
1. Eco Friendly
In my opinion shampoo bars are the best alternative to those plastic packaged liquid shampoos. Why? Because they create absolutely zero waste! Just like a bar of soap, once you use it up there’s no packaging left to throw away! This is especially great if you are trying to reduce your impact on the environment. Did you know that most shampoo bars last up to 3 shampoo bottles? That saves a lot of plastic!
Plastic is constantly polluting our oceans and our environment, and finding ways to reduce our plastic waste is crucial to living an eco friendly lifestyle. If you are trying to live zero waste, or simply trying to live just a little better for the planet then I highly recommend switching to shampoo bars to create significantly less waste. If you are looking for more easy ways to be eco friendly you can read my post here.
2. Healthier for Hair
Now this part quite honestly does depend on which brand you buy from but generally shampoo bars are made from all-natural, and sometimes even organic, ingredients. This is very important for your hair and your health! Most liquid shampoos contain lots of harsh chemicals that can be damaging for your hair. Plus this stuff then gets sent down the drain and may not even be filtered out by your waste system. If these harsh ingredients don’t get filtered out then they could end back up in the water stream. Although this may not seem like a big deal for one person, think of the thousands and even millions who are doing this! The negative effects can add up quickly.
I have a very hard time trying to find liquid shampoos made entirely from natural ingredients, yet it is very easy to find in shampoo bars! Shampoo bars are often made similarly to soap making, therefor making it easier to find with entirely natural ingredients. Also, because many of the people that are looking for shampoo bars are trying to live eco friendly, they often want them to be natural too, creating a great market to find these!
Keep in mind thought that some companies use sulfates in their shampoo bars and that’s a whole other story that i suggest you look into to decide if you care or not for that to be in your products.
3. Budget Friendly
Now I’m not talking about $1 shampoo bottles from the dollar store kind of budget friendly, I’m talking about all natural, long lasting shampoo budget friendly. Most of the shampoo bars that I have found are between $10-15 depending on brand and size of bar. They generally last around three months, again depending on the size and concentration. To me, this is a great deal as that is only about $4 a month on all natural shampoo!
There are also so many different options out there now and you can find shampoo bars for you specific hair type and needs which makes this even better. For example, I use a shampoo and conditioner bar set that is specifically for moisturizing as I have very dry and fine hair but I have also seen shampoo and conditioner bars for damaged hair, curly hair, colored hair, and more! As these become more and more popular more and more options will likely become available as well.
4. Easy to Use!
Using a shampoo bar is way easier then it sounds. All you have to do is lather it and massage the lather deep into your scalp and voila! You have just used a shampoo bar! Not so scary is it? You can choose to lather the bar in your hands and then apply to your scalp, or you can even just rub the bar directly on your hair a few times and then massage with your hands to create a full lather. Some bars lather better than others, and this depends on the ingredients! Some bars use potentially harsh chemicals to help create a rich lather, so if you are looking for a good lather that is much more natural, try to find one with natural glycerin that isn’t made from palm oil!
Where to Find Shampoo Bars
Shampoo bars are becoming much more common! It no longer is such a hassle trying to find them, yet you do still need to know where to look. I have even found shampoo bars at my local Whole Foods store!
Another great place to look is online. If you want some that are made locally or you want to support a small business, you can try finding some on etsy! I have also found a bunch of really great ones on Amazon. These ones are great because they are used by many and are well reported on. Plus when you order on Amazon you can get them right away and from a site you can trust! I created a list below of four of my favorite shampoo bars on amazon that are natural, and even have only sustainable palm oil or are palm oil free!
Will You Switch to Shampoo Bars?
Well I hope that you learned what you needed to know to switch over to using a shampoo bar! My husband and I switched several months ago and we love them! Shampoo bars are also becoming easier and easier to find, you can even pick them up at your local Lush store or order them online through the many different brands that make them! So what are you waiting for? Stop throwing out all those shampoo bottles and start using a shampoo bar!
