Sustainable living and low impact living are living in a way that creates as little of an impact on the environment as possible. Many of the things we use create a impact on our planet, often without us ever realizing the full effect! There are many aspects to sustainable living such as creating less waste, choosing natural products, and being more conscious. To start our low impact life we have to look at some of basic items we need and how to make them sustainable.

Sustainable Living Essentials
I got the chance to partner with Organic Basics to share with you some of their products that are part of their low impact project! Being a part of this project is wonderful because low impact living is very important to me. So I’m going to share with you my favorite items from their collection and how they help me live sustainably. These essentials are the basics that you need to start your low impact lifestyle.
Most of the clothes we get are not made ethically, and they are not made sustainably. To live a low impact lifestyle one of the most important things we can do is to make sure the clothes we have are ethical and sustainable. For our clothes to be ethical they need to be made by people who are working in comfortable conditions and are being paid a living or “fair” wage. To find out if your clothes are ethical look for a Fair Trade Certification or transparent information on the factories where the clothes are made. The less information on the factories that a company uses for their clothes the more likely it’s not made ethically. You can find out more information on ethical clothing practices here.
The second thing we should look for in our clothes is that they are sustainable. This means that they made with natural materials that don’t harm the environment. For example, although cotton is a natural material it needs a significant amount of water and pesticides. Organic cotton on the other hand does not use any harmful pesticides and requires significantly less water. You can read more on organic cotton in my post here. Another thing that makes clothes sustainable is if they will last. The longer things last, the less we consume, and the less resources we pull from the environment.
Organic Basics is a brand that incorporates all of these into their products. They have an entire page on their website that’s dedicated to the factories that they use for their products.
“They have the same sustainable vision as us – and follow it through by continuously reducing their environmental footprint.”Organic Basics on the factories they work with
In addition to using ethical factories, they only work with sustainable materials. These include: organic cotton, recycled materials, and even their SilverTech material made from organic cotton and silver to create soft, odor controlling and heat regulating material. They also use seamless knitting which creates zero weak points in the clothes and reduces fabric waste.
Additionally they design their clothes to last a long time. Part of this is designing clothes that are simple and functional so that they will be useful for their lifetime. But, does Organic Basics really live up to what they say? Well I have tried out several of their pieces to share with you my experience and how they help me reduce my impact on the planet.
Organic Cotton Socks
We all need socks. I do a lot of work outdoors in the heat which means that the socks I wear don’t last long. Yet constantly washing these socks means that they wear out sooner and it uses a lot of water and energy. So to reduce my impact I chose a pack of their organic cotton socks and they are so wonderful!
These organic cotton socks are very lightweight and breathable which is a lifesaver in the summer heat. I have already worn these socks several hot days in a row and they do not smell yet! Which means I can keep wearing them until they do. I sized up in the organic cotton socks so that my husband could have a pair too. He goes through socks often and because of their seamless knitting process I’m hoping that these will hold up much longer than his socks normally do. I will keep you all updated on the process!
Obviously we need underwear, and we need them far more than socks. Organic Basics prides themselves on their sustainable underwear! The company actually started because the founders were sick of the poor quality they saw in their underwear! As a basic necessity underwear really should last much longer than it usually does. This is where Organic Basics comes in! They have created a line of sustainable underwear built to last a long time. As mentioned above, washing clothes often will wear them out and use water and energy-both valuable to the planet! So by choosing underwear made from sustainable materials and built to last, we can have a far smaller impact on the planet. And, because these items are better made this means that we will have to buy fewer of these throughout our lives which reduces the amount of resources we pull from the planet.
Organic Basics offers their underwear in organic cotton and in their SilverTech material. This material allows your clothes to control odor and regulate heat which allows you to wear it longer before it has to be washed!
Sustainable Living Accessories
In addition to their many sustainable basics, Organic Basics also has a line of accessories that can help you in your journey to low impact living! These accessories include reusable tote bags, reusable mugs and water bottles, their SilverTech towels, bamboo toothbrushes, and more! I have been wanting to get some bamboo toothbrushes for a long time but haven’t yet because I find them all wrapped in plastic! This is obviously counter-productive since I am trying to reduce the plastic I use by getting a non-plastic toothbrush. I did not have this problem with the toothbrushes from Organic Basics though! Their bamboo toothbrushes came in a 2-pack for a very reasonable price and I received them in a small cardboard box that I can recycle! This makes me so happy because now I can keep reducing my environmental impact throughout my house!
Will You Start Low Impact Sustainable Living?
Organic Basics also has other basic clothing items such as tees and active wear, and they have equal options of clothes for both men and women! So if you are looking to start sustainable living, Organic Basics is the brand you can trust to find sustainable and ethical alternatives to all the basics that you need.
I know that their products have certainly helped me out in my journey to live a low impact lifestyle, so if this is your goal too head over to Organic Basics!
