Can Black Friday shopping be sustainable? With consumers spending billions, yes BILLIONS, of dollars each year often on items they don’t even need this is clearly not a good day for the planet. When considering it takes a lot of resources to make one product and in one day thousands of these products are sold we see the detrimental effects Black Friday is having on our lives and on our planet. Yet, for many this is the only time of the year they can afford certain items they need (or want), so is there a way we can still shop Black Friday deals without causing additional harm to our environment? This article will show you simple steps you can take to reduce your impact while Black Friday shopping.

Buy From Ethical Brands
The first way to make black friday shopping a little more eco friendly is to buy from eco friendly and ethical companies. Companies notice if their customers are switching to sustainable brands over theirs. This will encourage them to make more sustainable and ethical choices in their production and products.
When you support ethical brands you are not just buying eco friendly products but often these companies make donations to charities or other organizations that are reducing impact on the planet. Some eco friendly companies are even carbon offsetting and providing zero emissions shipping! This way you can help the environment and still get the items that you need.

Only Buy Items You Need
No matter the price, it is not a good deal if you don’t need it. Perhaps the biggest problem with Black Friday shopping is not the deals but that many buy more than they need. This results in excessive resources being used, clutter around the home, and perfectly good items getting thrown out or wasted. Although it’s ok to splurge once in a while, buying extras of item’s we only need one of isn’t helpful. Deals like “buy 2 get one free!” only encourage us to consume more and more items we don’t need that will clutter our home and complicate our lives.
Before you go Black Friday shopping (or before you go shopping any day of the year) you should examine what items that you truly need and write it down in a list. Stick to this list! If you are adamant and stick to this list then you will save yourself a lot of money.
Choose Quality Items That Will Last
In addition to purchasing sustainably made items you need, get something that will last a long time. Buying something that’ll last is a far better deal because it’ll prevent you from replacing that item next year! This is eco friendly too because it-again-requires less resources from the environment. It will also help keep your life a little simpler as you don’t have to constantly look for replacements. Buying to last will also save you a lot of money.
If you can’t seem to find an item you need that’s made sustainably or ethically, choose one that will last a long time.
Avoid Everything Else!
Once you’ve found all the items on your list-avoid buying anything else! We as consumers can be easily persuaded to purchase things we don’t need, so don’t give yourself the temptation! If you choose to close your browser or go home you’ll save yourself money by not buying additional unnecessary items.
One way that helps me avoid buying items I don’t need is that I started unsubscribing from brand emails. I now only subscribe to brands that have an item I specifically need. This has helped me so much! I would often see a good deal in an email and think “I need a new dress” and would desperately look through the sale for a dress I liked. This often ended with me getting something I didn’t really love because I settled for the deal not the dress. Now that I don’t get these emails I can look for a specific item I need and once I find a brand that has it I will subscribe to their emails. With all the Black Friday deals coming up I recommend you go through your emails right now and start unsubscribing to avoid unnecessary purchases.
What To Buy On Black Friday
Now that we’ve discovered the dos and don’ts of shopping sustainably on Black Friday, now it’s time to look at what we should buy. Many of the items that you need may be on sale so now is the perfect time to buy them! If you can’t afford to purchase from specific ethical fashion brands for example, then now may be the only time you can afford them.
Yet, what if the item you need is not having a Black Friday sale? Now may still be an excellent time to buy! Many eco conscious brands may not have a sale but will be making special donations on all purchases made. Plus, with all the money you saved by not buying unnecessary items you will likely be able to afford what you need even at full price!
Black Friday Shopping Deals I’m Looking For
Whenever I need items that are a little bit more expensive, I wait to see if there is a Black Friday deal for them. This often includes good quality ethical fashion brands, and even items for my home.
Here are the brands I am looking at for Black Friday Deals:
- Symbology Clothing for classy and fancy dresses and skirts.
- Literally everything from Made Trade because it’s all ethically made! From clothing to home goods, they have everything you could ever need made ethically. In fact, this year on Black Friday Made Trade is purchasing a carbon credit (equal to offsetting one metric ton of carbon!) for every $100 spent! This is in addition to their carbon neutral shipping!
- All the clothes from Thought Clothing! In addition to great professional wear, they also have amazing lounge wear.
- Apoterra Skincare for organic natural skin care. I can’t wait to try out their products! You can take 20% Off Storewide with code WINTERGOODS! Valid 11/29-12/2, 2019.
- Also any dress from People Tree. You can even get free delivery on orders over £50
- This Year I need some new bed sheets, and I want to make sure I get a good quality set of organic cotton sheets. So I am looking at a organic bedding set from Sol Organics because they make the softest sheets I’ve ever tried! If you need new sheets I highly recommend them.
- Rothy’s is my favorite shoe brand because they make shoes from plastic bottles, they’re super comfortable, and they’re washable! I even wrote a whole blog post on them! So I am always excited to see what they will do for the planet on Black Friday. You can get $20 off your first order!
Sustainable Shopping On Black Friday
So what did we learn? It will take some work, but Black Friday doesn’t have to be entirely bad for the planet. If we are mindful with our purchases by only choosing sustainable, long lasting items we truly need then we can make our Black Friday shopping sustainable.
