So we clearly need to do something about our food waste. That is where composting comes in! Yet, what if you’re like me and you don’t have a yard or an area for a bin? 1. Compost with a friend
This is super easy and can encourage others to compost too! Do you have a friend or family member with the perfect space in their yard for a compost bin? If so, why not ask them if you could put a compost bin there and take care of it? If you do it properly it won’t smell. And if you do all the workthey may be much more inclined to say yes!
Likewise, if you know of someone who composts ask them if you could help and donate your scraps to their bin! I am sure they would appreciate the extra compost!
2. Community Garden
If you are blessed enough to have a community garden in your neighborhood-take advantage of it! Not only is it a great place to get some good veggies but likely it has a compost bin as well for all of the plants! If your community garden doesn’t have a compost bin then perhaps you can be the one to change that and get one started!
3. Farmers Markets
There are many farmers markets that offer lovely composting program for the community. Many of these farmers markets offer drop off compost bins, or even stations where you can sign up and get your own container to fill and return it to get a new one! Plus it gives you even more excuses to go to a farmers market-as if you didn’t have enough already!
4. Worm Farm
Composting with worms can be really great because they break down the food and greens much faster, allowing you to have a smaller bin and to keep it inside! This may sound a little less appealing (especially if bugs are not your thing) but the benefits definitely outweigh the cons. There are many cities now that have composting programs and it seems the list keeps growing! the exact details of each city’s compost program varies but they can include doorstep pickup or even with the city waste disposal programs. This is how I compost all of my extra food scraps and waste! My city’s waste disposal offers a green bin that includes landscaping and lawn waste as well as most of my food waste and is then collected each week and taken to an industrial composting facility. This is super easy for me as all I have to do is dump it into the bin. Check out to see if your city or waste disposal has a composting program that you can start participating in it!
