The Easiest Reef Safe Sunscreen Swap for Summer
Sunscreen is an important part of our health. In fact many people spend their days layering on sunscreen regardless of the weather to protect their skin. Yet, recently there has been a lot of talk about sunscreen such as vitamin D deficiency, what are actual SPF numbers, and what really is the best sunscreen. But I am going to share with you one topic on sunscreen, and that is reef safe sunscreen.
What is Reef Safe Sunscreen?
Reef safe sunscreen is basically a sunscreen that doesn’t contain the harsh chemicals known for damaging coral reef systems. Many sunscreens contain these chemicals and once you jump in the ocean after layering this on you it washes off and kills the reefs.
But what makes these sunscreens dangerous for our reefs? Two specific chemicals are the main culprits for killing reefs, oxybenzone and octinoxate. In fact, these chemicals are so dangerous that they also have harmful effects on humans. These effects include various reproductive and hormonal issues. This chemical is so readily absorbed into the skin that it can even be found in our blood streams.
Why Choose Reef Safe?
As noted above, obviously there are lots of personal health risks associated with many chemicals found in sunscreens. In addition to our own health, non reef safe sunscreen is damaging to our environment as well.
I know what you’re thinking, it’s just a little bit of sunscreen it won’t cause any damage. Not true. Many huge tourist spots are areas where you can snorkel and dive to see coral reefs and other ocean wildlife. With hundreds of people a day wearing this and swimming these reefs are taking in a lot of these chemicals. Many tourist areas have even banned sunscreens with these harsh chemicals because of how damaging it was to the eco systems.
Plus, even if you’re not in the ocean with these sunscreens you can still be polluting them when you shower. Your harsh sunscreen can be cleansed right off of you and back into our environment.

The Best Reef Safe Sunscreen
For many people making the switch to something eco friendly and natural can be scary. Many mineral sunscreens feel like a paste (almost like they have minerals in them right?) and can be a huge turn off for many. Other mineral sunscreens may not rub into the skin very well and can leave white streaks on the body. Honestly, I don’t want to have white streaks or paste type of feeling. I wear sunscreen on my face everyday regardless of the weather and what I am doing and I don’t want to look super pale and white while doing business.
Hence the greatest reef safe sunscreen for the typical person.
I love this tinted sunscreen from Australian Gold. I have been using it for nearly two years now and here are 5 reasons why I love it so much.
First of all, it is reef safe (duh). We just learned about all the reasons why we need reef safe sunscreens, so the fact that a major sunscreen brand creates something that is reef safe is awesome. If you are looking for some more ways to be reef safe, check out my post here.
Second, it is from a trusted sunscreen brand! That seems to make eco friendly swaps much easier, especially any cosmetic swaps. When we already believe in a brand and know that it works then it encourages us to try out some items we may not have.
Third, this sunscreen is tinted! At first when I originally bought this I was nervous that it would be too tinted for my very light colored skin, but no worries here! This tinted sunscreen rubs into your skin perfectly to where it’s almost like I am wearing a BB-cream instead of a sunscreen!
Fourth, as with all of my cosmetic products this sunscreen is cruelty free as well! I have switched to cruelty free items along time ago and have never gone back! This sunscreen is no exception.
Free of Harmful Chemicals
In addition, this sunscreen is also fragrance free, phthalate free, hypo-allergenic, SLS free, Paraben free, BPA free, and oil free! This means that it is safe for your body. I have very sensitive skin so it was important for me to find a sunscreen that was not just reef safe but also wouldn’t cause any breakouts on my face! This sunscreen has kept me sun safe and acne free.
It Really Works
The most important reason however for why I love this sunscreen is that it works. It works great too. It is so great that when I went to Hawaii for two weeks I never got a single sunburn anywhere that I applied it! In full disclosure I had a terrible burn on my thighs but that was because I laid in the sun for hours without reapplying any sunscreen to my legs-don’t do that. Yet when I reapplied this sunscreen to my face I didn’t get burned once! IN HAWAII!!!! I wear this tinted sunscreen on my face every day now and I never get burned.
Swapping to Reef Safe Sunscreen
This sunscreen is so perfect for summer, especially if you are just starting to make some sustainable swaps in your life or even if you are tired of your sunscreen not rubbing in properly. This is now my go to sunscreen forever. I have been using this sunscreen everyday on my face for nearly two years and have only bought two bottles of it! It lasts a very long time because a little goes a long way!
If you don’t want a tinted sunscreen, or you want a bigger bottle, you can get the same one in white! I have this one as well and use it for the rest of my body since it comes in a larger bottle. I don’t use this one as often, but I keep it in my car in case I forget to apply sunscreen.
So, what are you waiting for? Go get this sunscreen now! Keep yourself and the ocean safe this summer regardless of your activities with this amazing reef safe sunscreen.
